Woburn’s history dates back more than 1000 years. The village takes its name from its Saxon settlers – ‘Wo’ meaning twisted or crooked – ‘Burn’ meaning stream.
Not surprisingly, the history and development of the village is centred around Woburn Abbey and the influence of the Dukes of Bedford over 450 years. St. Mary's church houses a small heritage centre which tells the story of the village and its famous landlords.
The village has made a concerted effort to maintain an atmosphere of Georgian elegance and more than 200 listed buildings line the main thoroughfare. As well as Georgian buildings, examples of Tudor and Victorian architecture can also be seen.
Although steeped in history, the village is very much a centre of modern life, with a wide range of shops and restaurants for you to visit.
